Scrappy September

September 1

I love scraps! I especially love scrappy quilts! If you are a quilter, you more than likely have scraps. I’m talking about leftover pieces of fabric from a quilt or project you made or a few charm squares or jelly roll strips that didn’t get used. Wherever they came from, they are scraps.

Most quilters have a method of storing their scraps until they find a use for them.  I keep mine in plastic shoe boxes. I save 2.5 inch squares, 5 inch squares, 2.5 inch strips, and strings(strips that aren’t quite 2.5 inches). I find that these are the sizes I’m most likely to use.

When I finish a project and have a small piece of fabric left,  I cut it up into these size pieces. Then I store them away until my box is full and I am ready to make something scrappy.

I’m calling this Scrappy September because I plan to finish one, maybe two scrappy quilts that I’ve started,  and make one 9 patch block every day from my 2.5 inch squares. That will be 30 9 patch blocks for a scrappy quilt top.

2.5 inch squares

This doesn’t look like many,  but I will be able to make all 30 of my 9 patch blocks with these.

I’d love for you to join me in using up some of your scraps. You don’t have to have many to make a project. Here are some small project ideas:

1: Scrappy zipper pouch

2: Scrappy table runner

3: Scrappy potholder

4: Scrappy pillow

Scrappy projects don’t have to be big. Small projects are fun also. I’d love to hear about some of your scrappy ideas and see some scrappy projects or quilts. I plan to share some of mine with you throughout the month of “Scrappy September
